MARYSVILLE, Ohio – A "Most Hated Insect" survey conducted online by The Scotts Company resulted in ticks and lawn grubs earning top honors. Ticks won by a landslide with 28 percent of the vote, showing an 11 percent margin over the runner up grubs with 17 percent of the vote.
Ants earned third place honors, slightly behind grubs with 16 percent of the vote. Meanwhile, earwigs and brown dog ticks tied for fourth place with 11 percent of the vote, while lawn pests sod webworms, armyworms and cutworms came in fifth with 6 percent of the vote. Other bugs that received votes included fleas, mole crickets, billbugs, chiggers, chinch bugs and the European crane fly.
The inaugural "Most Hated Insect" survey from Scotts, a producer and marketer for do-it-yourself lawn and garden care, highlighted a variety of insects that can cause severe damage to lawns during the summer months. Homeowners, horticulturists and insect haters alike were among those who logged onto the Scotts web site at www.scottslawn.com to cast their votes.
