MILWAUKEE – For the third consecutive year, outdoor power equipment engine manufacturer Briggs & Stratton has announced its list of the most outstanding public lawns in the country. For those contractors inspired by beautiful green grass, some of the preeminent lawns in America – the grand public green spaces that make up the Briggs & Stratton Top Ten Lawns List – for 2000 are:
- The Alamo, San Antonio, Texas
- Doubleday Field, Cooperstown, N.Y.
- George Eastman House, Rochester, N.Y.
- Georgia International Plaza, Atlanta
- Golden Gate Park, San Francisco
- Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Mich.
- "The Lawn" at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Va.
- Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center, Great Falls, Mont.
- Magnolia Plantation and Its Gardens, Charleston, S.C.
- United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md.
Each of the Top Ten Lawns was evaluated on overall appearance; lawn and garden maintenance and care philosophy; use of green space to enhance or complement the overall look; visual appeal; and significance of the site. Candidates were identified by turf management professionals, horticulturists, landscape designers and lawn and garden experts.
If your travel plans won't take you to any of the Top Ten sites, you can visit them at www.toptenlawns.com. You'll also find interesting facts about each of the sites.
And with all that inspiration, consider entering the Third Annual All-American Lawn Contest, sponsored by Briggs & Stratton and Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse. Any lawn can win the $5,000 grand prize – whether it is picture-perfect or just the perfect place for family and friends. Entry information is available at Lowe's stores, or visit www.allamericanlawn.com for details.
Speaking of lawn contests, also consider trying the Picture Perfect Lawn Contest, sponsored by Lawn & Landscape magazine and the Professional Lawn Care Association of America (PLCAA). This contest will recognize the best residential, commercial and public service projects in warm-season and cool-season grasses. Each winner will receive a $200 travel voucher to the 2001 PLCAA Conference and Green Industry Expo in Tampa, Fla.
