The unemployment rate in January rose 4.6 percent, a four-month high, while job growth was slow.
Employment rose by 111,000, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. This was short of economists' predictions of a 115,000-job gain.
Job growth continued in several service-providing industries over the month, and construction employment also rose. The number of manufacturing jobs continued to decline.
