Imagine this: You're driving down the road towing your open trailer loaded with miscellaneous tools and equipment. While driving you notice a very large pothole in the road directly in your path. Knowing if you swerve you could overturn your trailer, you hit the brakes but still hit the pothole very hard. As you look in your rear view mirror you see your trailer bounce up and land hard. Just then you see a piece of equipment fly over the side of the trailer landing in the middle of the road. You slow down and pull over to the shoulder of the road. Thankful that there is no oncoming traffic, you run to the middle of the road hoping for the best. When you get there you see your brand new chain saw bent, twisted and broken in about five pieces. You gather up what is left, hop back in your truck and continue to the jobsite thinking all the way: "Thank goodness I have insurance."
The next day, you call your agent and report the incident. After a long pause your agent says, "I'm sorry, but that new saw was not scheduled on your policy. You're not covered." That's when you ask, "What do you mean I am not covered?"
If this story sounds at all familiar or like it could happen to you, then you need to ask the following questions:
- Do I have to supply an up-to-date list to my agent in order to cover my equipment?
- Do I have any equipment coverage at all?
- Does my policy provide for off-premises equipment coverage?
- Does my policy provide for in-transit equipment coverage?
- Do I have a blanket miscellaneous tool floater?
- When is the last time my agent and I reviewed my equipment schedule?
- Does my agent have any idea I even own my equipment?
If you do not know the answers to these questions, you may have a serious gap in your insurance program. Many insurance programs offer some coverage as part of their package enhancements at no or very little cost. The key is to ask questions and understand what your policy covers. For example, I write most of my landscapers with a carrier that provides $15,000 off-premises and in-transit equipment coverage. What this means is without adding or scheduling any equipment this policy will give you, free-of-charge, coverage for your tools and equipment while they are on your trailer going to and from the job sites as well as on the site. In the story I told above, this claim would have been covered even if the insured contractor never added any equipment. Keep in mind this coverage does not take the place of an equipment policy, but rather fills in the gaps for those items you might have missed.
My idea of a well-constructed equipment policy is one in which you first add up the total value of all of your small tools and equipment. These are items that go out on the jobsite, such as edge trimmers, blowers, hand tools, etc. I usually use a maximum value per item of $1,000. Next, list all the larger items you want to insure, such as lawn mowers, backhoes, tractors, etc. Then total up the value of tools that remain at your home or shop, such as lifts, replacement parts, etc. After you give this information to your agent, he or she should be able to combine business personal property, blanket equipment and scheduled equipment coverage to make a very cost effective insurance program for you. Then add in the package policy enhancement coverage to make sure there are no gaps in coverage.
