CLEVELAND - Chris Briscoe, president of National Maintenance Services Corp., West Allis, Wisc., has a new tool to use for cleaning up after maintenance jobs and for keeping his wholesale mulch business clean: a Shindaiwa PB230 PowerBroom. Briscoe won this prize in the June Lawn & Landscape Online sweepstakes.
Servicing various suburbs in the Milwaukee area, Briscoe’s company performs about a 50/50 spilt of lawn maintenance and landscape projects. Additionally, the company sells wholesale mulch and topsoil and will soon begin selling landscape stones.
While the company has experienced steady growth since its inception in 1998, Briscoe noted that this year has been the best so far. "It’s growing on the landscape side," he noted, "and adding the mulch wholesale retail this year has made the company take more of a leap."
Briscoe’s client base is about 95 percent commercial, which he prefers because of the volume of work a commercial account offers compared to a residential account. Additionally, his company typically receives the snow plowing contracts from its commercial clients, thereby providing a steady, year-round cash flow.
The client base Briscoe picked up when he started his landscaping business also contributed to his preference of commercial clients. "I’m primarily commercial because when I went into business, I started on a few commercial properties that my family owns, and we had a few family friends with commercial businesses who had lawn maintenance contractors that went out of business."
When performing mowing, trimming, pruning and spring and fall cleanup jobs, Briscoe anticipates using his new PowerBroom to move debris and sweep walkways and driveways. He also plans to use the tool to keep mulch and topsoil piles confined and separated at his wholesale business.
