CLEVELAND - "I’ve never won anything in my life that I can remember," said Van Moore, owner, Greener Grass Landscaping, Cleveland, Ohio, expressing his excitement about winning a recent Lawn & Landscape Online sweepstakes. Through a random selection process, Moore was chosen as the winner of a Husqvarna 325LX trimmer.

Greener Grass Landscaping, established in 1997, services the southeast side of greater Cleveland, including the suburbs of Maple Heights, University Heights and Shaker Heights. With an all-residential client base, Moore and two employees do mostly installation and design work but also conduct maintenance for about 10 percent of the company’s jobs.

Moore said he started out doing mowing maintenance five years ago because he noticed the number of people in his area mowing lawns without doing a professional job. "I didn’t see anybody trying to do really good work," he explained. "I just felt that this was something I could do, too, and I figured I could just go right above everyone else."

Moore quickly learned that profits in his area were hard to come by in maintenance, so he decided to concentrate on installation and design work, including flower beds, pathways, rock gardens, water gardens, retaining walls and other hardscapes. "I know you have to have a market niche to make it work, or else you could just forget making money," he noted. "For a very minute company, I think we’re pretty strong, especially in the community."

Moore said his new trimmer will be especially useful for maintenance work and for making a nice presentation of newly installed flower beds. "When we put in a flower bed, we want to make a property look as nice as possible before we leave, so we’ll cut the grass, trim and edge around the area," he said.

With seasonal work, Moore has winters off to recuperate and get ready for the following year. "I do body repair in the winter - to get my body back together for another season," he joked.
